Trip Itinerary

DAY ONE: CAIRO The Pyramids
Arrive early if you want to get one of the limited tickets to visit their interiors (not recommended if you suffer from claustrophobia). This is a big site, you will want to walk (or take a camel) around three of the main pyramids, the Sphinx, and the solar boat (buried for the use of the dead pharaohs). The afternoon is a good time to visit the Egyptian Museum
DAY TWO: CAIRO
Take a day trip to Saqqara to see the ‘step’ pyramids which date back to the 27th century BC, a little before the great Giza monuments. The site is more compact than Gixa and some of the walled complex remains, as well as tombs decorated with carved reliefs. Then fly to Luxor.
DAY THREE: LUXOR
For many, the painted tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the nearby Temple of Hapshetsut are the highlight of a visit to Egypt. Among the best tombs are those of Ramses I, VI, VII and IX, Thutmose and Amenhotep. You will need a guide to make the most of them and to steer you round the worst of the crowds. Other musts are the temple at Karnak and the Luxor temple and museum.
DAYS FOUR-SIX: NILE CRUISE
A two-night cruise gets you up to Aswan via stops at the two excellent riverside sites: the impressive Temple of Horus at Edfu (preserved under dunes for about 2,000 years) and the Temple of Sobek, the crocodile god.
DAY SEVEN: ASWAN
Aswan is a green and pleasant city, but the highlight of your stay will probably be a day trip to the Temple of Philae on Lake Nasser’s Agilika Island. It was moved here when its original isaldn base was flooded by the Aswan High Dam, but is still a hugely atmospheric site.
DAY EIGHT: ABU SIMBEL
Fly up here rather than enduring the dusty taxi ride. The two temples – the Great Temple of Ra-Harakhte, with its four giant statues of Ramses II, and the Temple of Hathor, dedicated to Queen Nefertari – were also moved to the site when Lake Nasser was created. From here, fly back to Cairo then home.
